Abdullah Ibrahim / Dollar Brand – The Journey.
Brotherhood (3) – RTL (E) 703.
Vinyl, LP, Album.
South Africa, 1977.
“Dollar Brand’s 1977 album, The Journey, is a unique departure into avant-garde free jazz, showcasing a more experimental side of his music compared to his usual African-infused grooves. Co-produced with figures like Don Cherry and featuring musicians such as Hamiet Bluiett and Johnny Akhir Dyani, the album blends African folk roots with New York’s free jazz scene, particularly on the lengthy improvisation “Jabulani” and the Middle Eastern-flavored “Hajj (The Journey)”. It represents a significant evolution following Brand’s move from South Africa to New York, reflecting both his African heritage and a new avant-garde direction.” WWW.

I have been searching for this title for many years. Wanted the MFSL pressing, could not find one, and settled for this awesome Asylum UK/German pressing. Playing surface is flawless, showing once again that those LPs we were quick to dispose of with the start of the digital era, are priceless today and still of exceptional quality. My copy has no ticks and pops. The embossed texture of the sleeve means that in time it has lost some of its sheen, but I can live with that.

Great to see the Vinyl resurrection has taken off so well. I fully agree that the quality of a good vinyl LP is difficult to surpass by Digital means.

I wonder if this is still the case with Vinyl today, which I assume is all recorded digitally and perhaps ends up losing that analogue sparkle?
