My Vintage Collection: Time for some Housekeeping - or not?

@alternativeroute, Nov 5th, 2014:

^^^ look that does not change the fact that the TD150 is cold and lonely there :teach: I can hear it calling me in pain 'turntable guyyyyyyyy', 'turntable guyyyyyyyyeyyyy - save and sell me on for an extortionate profit' 🤣🤣🤣

@charles Nov 5th, 2014:

I was very fortunate to listen to all those Mullard 5-20 valve amplifiers coupled together in the AV mode at Eric's home.

I have never listened to such a beautiful valve sound from all these 5-20's together.

Just absolute fantastic valve sound

Me, Nov 5th, 2014:

Alty, I certainly cannot argue with that comment :BWAHAHAH: :BWAHAHAH:

Charles, thank you for the kind words, but let's not forget to talk about the beautiful collection abiding in your home! (y)

Wonder how much of today's gear would find favour in 40-50 years time - not much I guess!

FD, nothing more for you. You have a Rohde & Schwarz Ballempfanger valve FM tuner there. A friend of mine has one. To see it is to want it. It is the thing they checked the quality of broadcasts with. It makes even a Marantz 10 seem like a joke. A bit like that mythical Technics SACD player though: Fantastic machine and nothing to use it on. All dressed up and nowhere to go.

I wondered if someone would recognise that Ballempfanger, ex SABC and donated to me by a Radio Ham. The SABC apparently used them to relay terrestrial radio stations from site to site at the time.

It is missing one valve, can't recall which one now but I bypassed the entire stage with a cap and it still worked.

AG, you have inspired me to check on the missing valve, perhaps @charles or @fredeb might have one in stock. Thank you for the comments!

Gmmpf. Big city people. In the boondocks, they made do with this. Apparently, if the microwave was down they would broadcast from PE, catch it with this in Grahamstown, and send it on. "Relay receiver" I suppose there was one for each radio channel frequency. I would have thought a Rohde for English in Grahamstown but apparently not

I could quite happily spend a few weeks playing with all the fine equipment shown in that link!

I wasn't aware that the two-tone knobs on the AU-111 were in demand, two of my AU-111s have them while the other one has the all-aluminium knobs, which I have always preferred.

Intelesting~!

@jadedgem, Nov 6th:

There is nice information bits about Sansui history on the Hashimoto transformer site. Most of the old Sansui staff now work for Hashimoto.

Then one of those ones that you do not prefer can come to me.. :Whoohoo: we can set up a debit order system and I can pay you off for ten years.. :whip:

Me, Nov. 9th:

I have a few old Technics setups but haven't started with sorting those yet. (Note the old Sony 12" B&W Portable TV, over 50 years old and perhaps some 10 hours usage only during this period.)

Apart from this one that is receiving some TLC i.r.o. the speaker terminals, which were really not a great idea from the mighty Technics company:

@chipwelder, Nov. 9th, 2014:

Can make out the se-a5... what is the rest?

Solid 50 watts seem good enough... 70w just dandy... preferably no unobtainium power ic's?

The se a5 looks sweet... but i am sure it aint of the less collectible ones... obviously the new class a "opamps" arent an issue...

From me, Nov.9th 2014:

The SE-A5 is certainly a keeper!

The other ones are the very first Technics kit that I bought new in the 80s, last used as an Audio means for a computer

SL-PG100 CD Player
SA-GX130 Receiver
RS-TR232 Tape Deck

The stuff will probably relocate to the new workshop I am still setting up, one of the jobs earmarked for December.

I had a SA-AX540 receiver that was superflous to my needs but I have already given it away to a mate for his pub. All the Technics receivers similar to the above components system make use of some audio integrated IC which I am pretty sure is unobtainable by now.

""You have a Rohde & Schwarz Ballempfanger valve FM tuner there"

I also have one, like you said, it still uses tubes. If I am correct it can even drive a small loudspeaker.

Eric, I should still have some of its spares and tubes. Please let me know what you need.

Thank you Charles, the valve is an EF800, dead filament.

Looking at the R&S, it amazes me how I have managed to collect so much electronic bits & pieces. One can never just throw this stuff away, so one hordes it.

Restoring the Ballempfanger is one thing, the question remains what on earth am I going to do with it? I'll never use it...?

I should have one, I will let you know.
It is an amazing mechanical made set. Tuning gears, etc.
It has a very sensitive RF front end. If I remember correctly is even uses E88CC valves.
