Product review by Upscale Audio on the Focal Chorus 726
Ideal for a wide range of music, the powerful and dynamic Focal Chorus 716 speakers let you hear your music collection in a whole new light.
Exceptional reputation
Founded in 1980, Focal loudspeakers is widely regarded by hi-fi experts as a first-rate player in speaker design. The French company is proud of its many awards and that it still builds its speakers in France - including the Chorus 700 range. Throughout its thirty plus years it has innovated constantly and features such as the inverted tweeters have now become hallmarks of the company.
Signature Focal drive units
Despite being Focal's budget range, the Chorus 700 series uses its famous inverted tweeter design. By inverting the dome, Focal claims a superior interface between dome and voice coil giving a more consistent response, especially at higher frequencies. The Chorus 700 range also features a new tweeter suspension material called PORON, which provides better dampening for a smoother, sound. In short, the treble sounds lifelike, dynamic and less 'shut-in'.
Polyglass bass cone
Matching the impressive tweeter in the Chorus 716 are similarly fine bass units. Using two smaller woofers gives the Chorus 716 a punchy and tuneful bass that's always quick to respond. Polyglass technology gives these speakers their distinct sound quality - the woofer units have the rigidity of glass with the damping qualities of paper. This construction gives the Chorus 716 a wonderfully open and transparent sound quality, allowing you to hear right into the heart of the music.
Solid and stylish
With cabinets made from MDF of up to 25mm thick, the Chorus 716 speakers are a particularly solid design. Further refinements include non-parallel inner wall structures, to help disperse standing waves. Combined with the aerodynamic bass port, the Chorus 716 speakers have a fast and pacey sound quality. The comparatively narrow width also helps the imaging further - giving an even greater impression of 'being there'.
Obsessive attention to detail
Attention to detail is a Focus hallmark. For example the grille cloth is designed to be as acoustically transparent as possible. The insulated terminals provide a well-shielded and low resistance cable connection. The carefully designed OPC crossover uses high quality components for superior soundstaging. These may all be small points but they come together to make the Focal Chorus 716 one of the finest sounding speakers in its class.
For a speaker with a unique take on sound quality, vive la difference with the Focal Chorus 716!
